Scam? - Data Entry Clerk Globe Life Employee Review

I was contacted today by a "recruiter" and they said I have the ability to work from home with very good compensation. They sent me a check to get some things from their vendor. So after doing more research and asking the so called "recruiter" the number for HR they said they would give it to me later after I pay the vendor. My fiancé told me she found some things talking about it pertaining to a scam. So I'm not gonna buy anything until I can get proof of legitimacy or I'm told it's a scam.
