Sad to realize that a private university operates under a business regime. First off, this department is true cold calling sales, not counseling prospective students. Rarely is there any form of inbound interest. Everything is self generated cold calling and pushing prospective students in the door.
Management discourage transparency to prospective students. Your success is measured against a quota (aka # of students per month / quarter).
There is a major lack of training and care for employees. Most (not all) managers are consumed in the status quo and uninterested in professional growth of their team members. No one is concerned with the "why" or "connecting the dots" on how their job / work impacts the company's success, just worried about making a paycheck.
Furthermore, the qualifications of students is all legal based; nothing is educational prerequisite based. Management's only concern is if the prospective student has fulfilled required documents. There are no interest in GPA or other academic experiences, which puts this position on the front lines of diluting a degree from this university.
I have had nothing but SUCCESS in this role, but felt it was time to share the reality versus mask my success with a paycheck.
BEWARE: THIS IS A SALES DEVELOPMENT POSITION
