Terrible Management - University Counselor Grand Canyon Education Employee Review

Pros

Good benefits like 15 days PTO, 11.5 paid holiday's, random paid half days, and occasionally free tickets to basketball games. You can also earn work from home but it is a constant roller coaster and will be revoked constantly.

Cons

Management is terrible. Corrective Action Plans are handed out on a regular basis. Unreasonable job expectations for enrollment, retention, and regular productivity. Managers can do whatever they want which can become confusing when trying to figure out the constantly changing policies. There is not as much opportunity as it seems. People rarely move up or are able to move to different departments. CAP is used to prevent people from applying to other jobs within the company. Not enough leads or good leads to perform to standard consistently. Counselors are set up to fail.

Grand Canyon Education Response

The university receives student inquiries that are equitably distributed to our University Counselors by management. Counselors (regardless of level) can be successful in their roles based on their overall skillset. Ideally, we'd like to see people continue their careers here at GCU & grow within the Lope family. However, we understand certain roles may not be the best fit or have limited opportunities for advancement. We are very proud of staff who move on professionally within their chosen career field.

Cons

I have truly wrestled with what to write in this review, as I do believe there have been good aspects of the role over the past 4 years. However, I think prospective employees deserve a clear understanding of the role that is not included in the job description. This is a quota-based role. As a UDR, you are responsible for monthly metrics that must be met. It is a strictly sales job, and those coming from a previous higher education background will soon be shocked. To truly thrive in this role, a sales background is needed and the ability to work 50-plus hours a week. If you do not meet your student enrollments, you will be placed on an improvement plan. If you thrive in a fast-paced setting with continuous pressure to be more and do more, this is the role for you.
