Pros

The culture at HEB in the past was really inspirational and phenomenal. In recent years that has changed in my opinion. The people for the most part are good people. The company really does care about the service and experience that they provide to their customers. The benefits are good.

Cons

HEB is terrible at promoting people from within. It is so frustrating when long term partners complete their education or degrees and are not promoted or considered for positions. Additionally because of the size of the company and the high number of departments, whoever is the Director of that department can and does have way too much power in choosing the fate of their subordinates. Hiring practices in particular departments are questionable. Individuals are encouraged or asked to apply for positions that haven't even been posted yet, and that person will get the position because the Director of the department likes them for whatever reason. That is not fair. Partners should be evaluated or considered for a position based on their work not on their relationship with the manager. The politics happening in some areas is absolutely destroying the reputation and culture HEB tried so hard to portray to outsiders. Partners are asked to perform outside of their job description and therefore are not compensated correctly. That is not fair.

Pros

None. Get out while you can.

Cons

Houston location has the worst leaders. They're cheap with raises and cut the good people so the management team can get better bonuses. They make up rules that make no sense when they feel like. There are guys in the yard who have no job titles but somehow are still working there doing nothing all day? The safety leads/radio room/management are a joke. They cover up for the people they're buddies with. Ran into the gate? Destroy thousands of dollars of goods or a trailer? Ran out of gas in the middle of the road driving the mule offsite? Not a problem if you're buddies with management and safety. If you're buddies with management, you get opportunities offered to you even though you may be among the worst and slowest spotters. If you're not buddies with management/safety/radio, you have to watch your back. HEB corporate needs to look into management here.
