Pros

The company as a whole really cares about Texas and its customers. As a data scientist, there is a lot of data to work with. The tools are pretty good (Azure databricks). Sometimes the culture is really cool (H-E-B Live felt like one of those tech company meetings with tons of cheering and free swag). I'm going to give this place 3/5. (1 star for my experience, but 5 stars for what I think it could be.) I have hope for the future here for data science. There were other teams that were doing great work, I've heard that some of the hurdles I faced are no longer impeding things.

Cons

No path to promotion if you aren't the chosen one. Managers are unlikely to shield you from unrealistic demands from executives, so be prepared either to disappoint people or to be overworked. Bad directors / managers can chew through the careers of 5-10 bright people below them before any action is taken by upper management. Sometimes the culture is petty (one time a director shared to the team that people had been complaining that team members weren't turning on their cameras for zoom meetings. Not sure why the complainers couldn't just directly tell the non-camera user in the meeting "Hey, could you turn your camera on?" instead of tattling to our leader about it later. Felt middle-school-ish.)

Pros

None. Get out while you can.

Cons

Houston location has the worst leaders. They're cheap with raises and cut the good people so the management team can get better bonuses. They make up rules that make no sense when they feel like. There are guys in the yard who have no job titles but somehow are still working there doing nothing all day? The safety leads/radio room/management are a joke. They cover up for the people they're buddies with. Ran into the gate? Destroy thousands of dollars of goods or a trailer? Ran out of gas in the middle of the road driving the mule offsite? Not a problem if you're buddies with management and safety. If you're buddies with management, you get opportunities offered to you even though you may be among the worst and slowest spotters. If you're not buddies with management/safety/radio, you have to watch your back. HEB corporate needs to look into management here.
