Great learning atmosphere, poor initial compensation plan - Branch Manager H&R Block Employee Review

Pros

Block is a good place to learn about the tax preparation business. The training is what you make of it...you can learn just about anything about taxes that is available. It is a great way to make money on a part-time, seasonal basis. It is fairly easy to obtain a job with the company - if you have management experience, it is easy to become an office manager. With hard work over time, (several years) you can create conditions where you are making a good amount of money ($10-$20k) in a realtively short period of time. (2-3 months) The pay is commission-based - with a draw that does not have to be paid back if you do not make enough to cover the draw.

Cons

This is not a full-time job. Only those who work in the corporate office, or who are District Managers level and above have the opportunity to work full-time. The initial hourly draw pay is poor for entry-level workers - for the first two years, it is much lower than one would expect. It is still not what you would expect for long-term employees and/or office managers. Because of this, turnover is higher than you would expect for a company this size. There is little incentive for entry-level people to return - could be a problem for Block in the future.

Pros

Flexible availability. Path for promotion is obvious and quantified.

Cons

Bonus/commission it is based on level and sales so is low in states without a state tax form. Hourly wage comes out of bonus. Pressure to sell items that don't add to your commission. They push customer surveys but you can be penalized if someone complains about the company, price, amount of emails etc even though you have no control. Some employees are frustratingly low quality and you will spend time helping or fixing their mistakes time that works against your commission. You are expected to answer phones, make appointments, scan, print, take money, help new comers all while maximizing returns. If you take over someone's client and find a mistake you are expected to work against your commission to file amendments peace of mind claims etc.
