Pros

Wonderful tax education with access to massive resources. Seasoned CPAs are kind and helpful to new Tax Associates.

Cons

The hours allowed don't add up to a reasonable paycheck. When applying, the estimates of what I could make as a new associate were overblown by magnitudes! With the amount of training and credentials required, you would expected a professional job experience but the position ended up a minimum wage job with very few hours doled out. Prior to applying you must have graduated from their Block Academy. I spent 7 weeks, often studying 12 hours a day and passed the test in week 8. Once hired there were many more training hurtles to clear with only minimal hours allowed averaging $240 for two weeks work. Once integrated in the storefront office, the pressure to sell their financial products was intense and included another 4 week long Teams training. Being "ready to serve" was a big accomplishment but the access to the CPA's was spotty when the office was busy.

Pros

Flexible availability. Path for promotion is obvious and quantified.

Cons

Bonus/commission it is based on level and sales so is low in states without a state tax form. Hourly wage comes out of bonus. Pressure to sell items that don't add to your commission. They push customer surveys but you can be penalized if someone complains about the company, price, amount of emails etc even though you have no control. Some employees are frustratingly low quality and you will spend time helping or fixing their mistakes time that works against your commission. You are expected to answer phones, make appointments, scan, print, take money, help new comers all while maximizing returns. If you take over someone's client and find a mistake you are expected to work against your commission to file amendments peace of mind claims etc.
