Pros
- Great industry, friendly, hard-working, laid-back people - Great new building opposite Blackfriars in London, overlooking the Thames - Publishing is generally a low-pay industry, but company has made commitments to improve conditions for staff at the lower end of the scale - Preferring on-premise IT solutions means that the application and infrastructure landscape is varied and interesting - A lot of the IT staff are involved to some extent in both support work and minor projects, allowing for a breadth of experience
Cons
- No clear career progression path for those of us working in IT. I hear that within the Publishing Divisions this is different - Few opportunities to work on the large projects; this work too often goes to contractors; no belief in (or knowledge of) in-house expertise - General discontent within IT staff, especially with management, despite general approval of company - Very few people in Management actually have budget approval -- anything from training, to projects, to salaries for large teams comes from central pots, meaning that no budget is ringfenced and big projects end up eating the whole pie
