Pros

The ladies I worked with were very nice. I am trained on Redken Color, and I was glad to work on the color that I had training with. I've been using Redken Color since the 1990's.

Cons

The low, low prices of the services that make it impossible to earn a living wage. I started doing hair in the 1990's. The least I ever charged was $20 for a haircut and that was when I was a junior stylist. It's actually fairly insulting that the prices are so low. It makes the public think that Hair Cuttery is a chop shop like Supercuts. After talking to a few of my co-workers and finding out how much they made ( after working their tails off there for years) I knew I wasn't going to stay very long. Hair Cuttery also screws over its stylists by not allowing appointments to be made. The wait is usually an hour at the shop I where I used to work. It makes customers angry and the stylists get blamed. And having such an a la cart menu and cheap prices, really makes it so the clients don't value your time or your work. I spent at least 20K getting my Cosmetology License, and taking advanced training a Vidal Sassoon and other places. Most of the ladies I worked with were annoyed at how we are supposed to push products at the clients. Professional products are being sold at drug stores now. They are easy to get at cheaper prices, elsewhere. I tried to take education classes, but they were few and far between. And they were always filled up, so I couldn't sign up, if I wanted to. The higher ups really could care less about their stylists making a living wage. I also find it hugely disrespectful that the salon is even open on Sunday. Oh yes, and I had split days off, which is ridiculous and disrespectful as well. I quit because I felt like a slave and most stylists make under 30K a year, which is beyond the pale.

Redken is a great product and we're happy that you got to further develop your skill in working with the product! It is always nice to work with people you enjoy - I hope that you met some life long friends and contacts! Hair Cuttery is our value brand - it is important to us to be able to offer affordable services for the majority of our clients; while we will never be a chop shop it is important to offer fantastic services that wouldn't break the bank. Your comment about our not allowing Stylists to make appointments is not 100% correct, we do allow for appointments once you reach a certain level - it sound like you hadn't quite reached that level; however you were always free to inform your clients of your schedule and suggest a time for them to come in that may be less crowded than others. If you view offering products to your clients as "pushing products" that is the way it is going to be perceived by the client. It is NEVER our desire for you to push products; however it is our desire for you to educate your clients on how to maintain or extend the life of their style and if a product can help them do so, you would be remiss if you didn't offer it. Our education is free; as such, the classes will fill quickly; knowing this, I'm surprised that you didn't sign up as soon as the class was made available. Humm...I have to respectfully disagree with your comments on our not caring about our Stylist making a living wage - each Stylists controls their earnings by how many hours they work and how many clients they service...we care so much that we off-set your earnings if you are having a slow day by paying the greater of commission or an hourly rate. We are open seven days a week to service a highly diverse client population - while you may hold Sunday as special; others may hold Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, etc. special - we do not dictate which day our clients should reserve as special. Every for profit company is in business to make a profit; but unlike some businesses we invest the vast majority of our profit back into the business which means back into the Stylists. We have a number of affordable health care plans that many of our Stylists are thrilled to be a part of! Additionally, we cover all the cost of the products you use, the marketing and advertising, the lease and the upkeep of the salons, the salon equipment, client liability, and a host of other expenses that you may not see or realize - we do this because we want our Stylists to work in a supportive environment and build their book of business without having to be concerned with all the cost associated with running a business - in essence you are building your own business and growing your client base with no expense to you...we cover everything and you can earn up to 50% commission as well as bonuses - meaning you have the opportunity to earn the majority of every dollar you bring in without any of the business expense. We sincerely wish you well.

It's wonderful to hear that you love our team atmosphere and feel supported in your career development. We know that a busy salon brings its fair share of fast-paced stress, and we appreciate your ability to handle the rush so beautifully. Pros

Close-knit group of coworkers, casual/relaxed management style, busy location

Cons

not much flexibility for schedules (have to work late nights), color line is limited and low quality, no support from upper management and salon needed a lot of updates that I think have been taken care of now, but were left in unacceptable condition for a long time. Also, not enough structure to who takes walk-ins, which led to laziness, drama, and bad customer service.
