Poor Management and Company culture - Bookseller Half Price Books Employee Review

Pros

Some of my favorite coworkers I’ve ever had. Most booksellers and those in lower level positions were wonderful. Fun work parties? The discount was kinda cool I guess

Cons

Cliquey Corporate Culture. I worked here for over a year and suffered like many of my fellow coworkers due to an intense level of favoritism. When I first started working here there were constant big claims about how much of a “family” we were and nonstop good vibes only behavior - pushing therapy or near breakdowns on employees as previously mentioned in other reviews. I saw a bypassing of sexual harassment that occurred between an employee and multiple victims simply because they had family members who also worked at HPB and consistently harassed people but went to HR before other employees could report it. Between the lack of management intervention with belligerent coworkers, as well as belligerent customers, I got to the point where I felt I was going into battle almost every workday. I was stretched too thin being expected to work constantly - whilst the folks upstairs at corporate would consistently show up late, take long lunches, and window shop around the store. Booksellers were never allowed to shop while working, and being late 3x over your work career no matter the gap results in an action plan, or even being fired. I could continue to go on but after a year of nearly constant incidents that would be a book on its own (hah)

Pros

Great coworkers. Get quarterly bonus checks. Not a super hard job.

Cons

Mangement is kinda iffy and they really require you to do a lot more work than you're paid for.
