Pros
Discount. Working inside. Working with books and media.
Cons
The usual downsides of retail- rude customers, shifting schedules, working on holidays, hard work. But so much more beyond that. I recently re-read, “Good to Great,” which shows the common traits of the best companies in history, and it’s shocking how not only does Half Price Books have none of those qualities, they’re the opposite. They proudly haven’t known what they were doing since 1972. Upper management is clueless, middle management sometimes knows what they’re doing. Their culture and hiring practices are a big, big problem. Huge favoritism. Uneven application of standards. To this day other former employees and I get upset taking about our experiences there because the place could have been, and sometimes was, a great place to work, but it devolved into a hellish nightmare.
