Awful work life balance - Physician Assistant Hoag Memorial Hospital Employee Review

Pros

Doctors and fellow APPs are nice.

Cons

Work life balance is VERY poor especially for salary. Consistently working overtime without additional pay (and this is not even including the 24/7 telephone call coverage we are required to take). It is not uncommon to have to answer to calls/messages after hours and on weekends. I have worked 14+ hours in one day when I am supposed to work on average 8 hour days.

Pros

My time working at Hoag Hospital as an IT Trainer has been incredibly meaningful. I’ve truly appreciated the work-life balance, which has helped me feel supported both professionally and personally. Hoag has created an environment where employees feel valued, heard, and connected. I always look forward to the annual IT summits and IT town halls because they bring everyone together, encourage learning, and help us stay connected to the bigger picture within IT. I’ve especially appreciated the emphasis on employee engagement and the effort leadership puts into making employees feel included and informed. Those experiences have contributed to a strong sense of community and pride in being part of the Hoag team.

Cons

One challenge I have experienced is that opportunities to participate in certain projects or initiatives do not always feel evenly distributed, which can make professional growth feel inconsistent across team members. In addition, there have been times when the work environment has felt more micromanaged than expected for a salaried position, particularly in situations where employees are capable of working independently. I believe increased trust, autonomy, and equitable access to development opportunities could further strengthen employee satisfaction and engagement.
