Mismanagement & fear-based leadership - Marketing Specialist Hoag Memorial Hospital Employee Review

Pros

The marketing team is made up of talented, collaborative individuals, creating a great group to work with. Unfortunately, the work environment pushes people away, leading to constant turnover and frustration.

Cons

Most of us came in with high hopes for Hoag's newest marketing team under a new CMO. But unfortunately, what looks like a collaborative, forward-thinking group is actually a chaotic, high-turnover mess. Leadership is more focused on looking good than doing good, and investing in in-house talent is nonexistent. The culture is full of fear and instability. There’s no real strategy, people are overworked and undervalued, and if you speak up, you won’t last long. Deadlines are unrealistic, feedback is all over the place, and office politics run the show. If you’re looking for a team that actually supports great work and strategic thinking, this sadly isn’t it.

Pros

My time working at Hoag Hospital as an IT Trainer has been incredibly meaningful. I’ve truly appreciated the work-life balance, which has helped me feel supported both professionally and personally. Hoag has created an environment where employees feel valued, heard, and connected. I always look forward to the annual IT summits and IT town halls because they bring everyone together, encourage learning, and help us stay connected to the bigger picture within IT. I’ve especially appreciated the emphasis on employee engagement and the effort leadership puts into making employees feel included and informed. Those experiences have contributed to a strong sense of community and pride in being part of the Hoag team.

Cons

One challenge I have experienced is that opportunities to participate in certain projects or initiatives do not always feel evenly distributed, which can make professional growth feel inconsistent across team members. In addition, there have been times when the work environment has felt more micromanaged than expected for a salaried position, particularly in situations where employees are capable of working independently. I believe increased trust, autonomy, and equitable access to development opportunities could further strengthen employee satisfaction and engagement.
