I am a full-time department head of three departments, one of them being a service department. I do not receive any extra pay (compared to other full timers who have one department) for having such responsibility (including ordering and pricing all three departments), instead, I am given less people and less time to get the same workload finished and when it is not finished, I get "jokingly" harassed. Often, I have to "listen for the bell" while being put throughout the store and customers are not pleased when I cannot appear instantly, though we aren't supposed to be placed outside of the department. There isn't any down-time in the seasons anymore and everyone is pushed towards the edge with the sweatshop workload and unrealistic expectations. Customer service also doesn't seem to be important, either, as higher management only care about seasonal and project memos being complete. Customers have noticed that employees look stressed. Note for part-timers: you'll likely have to wait until someone leaves before you can obtain full-time. Management tends to just give part-timers full-timer responsibiltiies without any added pay, like being a department head. Many will feel used and rightfully so. Nobody tells people this when they apply, but this company is not a cute little Christian craft store. You will be standing for long periods of time (my store doesn't even schedule 15 minute breaks) and will be working hard physically to the point of your body aching. Being understaffed will also mean that there will be less people to make sure safety proceedures are done properly. It is actually a very demanding job for it just being a retail store. You will also spend a LOT of time moving the same product from one area to another, often times being in the way of customers and making them angry.
