Engaged Employer

Pretty standard for a large General Contractor.. a lot to be desired though.⁴ - Project Engineer Holder Construction Employee Review

Pros

- Above average pay for the industry with annual raises and bonuses. - Diverse project base, with data centers and aviation being the main projects - Annual company retreats that allow for networking abilities - Trade responsibilities shift from project to project, so employees get excellent exposure to many parts of construction

Cons

- Terrible work-life balance, with the excuse "it comes with the industry". Personnel are given lots of PTO day, but are shamed for taking 3 day weekends and have to negotiate for longer breaks. - Lot of the project management personnel have the "work no matter what" mentality; I was chastised for not being readily available while at home sick on multiple occasions. Of course when COVID hit, this took a complete 180 (felt like out of schedule concerns rather than employee health though as employees were consistently asked to break company policy for the sake of the project) - 11-12 hour shifts are to be expected, pretty standard for the industry though. - Teams can become very clique-y, as personnel get recycled from previous jobs.. leading to unwelcoming environments with new projects. - No form of development or training. New hires are given a list of "key skills" and expected to either develop them on their own OR seek out a "development partner" who is often too busy or unwilling to provide constructive feedback. When actually given, the feedback is inconsistent from manager to manager. - The moving services used for relocations are notorious for losing and or breaking things. There is compensation available for these situations, but it just ends up being a major inconvenience that takes months to resolve.

Holder Construction Response

Thank you for sharing your honest feedback. Our people are our most valuable asset, and we care about their wellbeing both inside and outside the office. The construction industry has a reputation for being demanding, with long working hours. Holder is thankful for our hardworking, dedicated associates with a “do what it takes” attitude to make our projects successful. We value and support work-life balance and offer ample Paid Time Off necessary to keep our associates happy and healthy, and performing their best. We do our best to perpetuate a culture that is inclusive, and encourages utilizing PTO – not shames it. Jobsites are ever-changing, and associates frequently shift and move, so upholding that culture on jobsites is something we are always working on. The growth and development of our associates in their careers is extremely important to us. Some examples of associate development opportunities are New Associate Forums, All-Company Retreats, and our Knowledge Center (which houses wikis, trainings, courses, templates, etc.). We encourage associates to have multiple development partners to get various perspectives, and suggest frequent conversations.
