Pros

Not really any pros other than free ice! it'll also get you a B license and experience so you can get a better job.

Cons

The cons are immense. 1. Unsafe working conditions, they make you drive overloaded vehicles constantly which always have reported problems that never get fixed. Lift gates that almost have you falling off them, brakes that make you steer into another lane and horns that constantly never work. 2. Horrible pay system: the theory is the harder you work the more you make and that's true, but the amount of work is ridiculous especially if you are new. You make the same if you've been working there 10 years or 10 days, so don't expect a raise for just being there. You never know how much you're actually getting paid your just hoping they don't short you cause there is no good way to know with their "ring system", and "ferry loads". When I was hired I was told 10% commission everywhere, then I found out only out the the first ring wax 10%, then was told after many talks with management that noone makes that much. The ferry loads are supposed to be for extra work you do to compensate you, used to be able to track on paycor but now say they've been recorded so now it's impossible to know if you get them or not. Asked for a raise and was told no and they couldn't do anything for me. You also don't get paid for your drive time so if you're driving an hour to your stops and a hour back your not getting paid for 2 hours. 3. Benefits: was not even informed we really had a benefit program until recently along with 5% 401k match and profit sharing. I don't use their insurance heard from many it's horrible and costs way to much. If you ask for days off sometimes you'll still have to work them cause management can't schedule properly. If you get sick or can't make it in you make zero money. PTO is a joke you make your hourly wage which is garbage and only get them after a full year of continual work, also management tries tells you can only take them if it works for them half the time especially if there busy. 4. Hours: the hours are always long especially in the hight of summer and even longer in the winter. Your normal day in the summer is atleast 10 to 14 hours of intense manual labor. You will be worked to the bone by some managers. Some plants work there drivers so late as midnight I've heard from multiple sources. Overview: this company doesn't see you as an investment but only a quick way to make money. Workers describe themselves as Bic lighters we're great while we last but once we run out of fuel they'll just get new ones.

Home City Ice Response
9y
First and foremost, thank you for the feedback on your experience. We are committed to making Home City Ice the best place possible for all of our employees and knowing what is going well, and areas that could be improved, is extremely important. Since you took the time to list some of your concerns, I want to take some time to provide a response to those. 1. Safety is our top priority. It is why we have safety meetings to review best practices and ask if there is anything that needs to be addressed. All employees are empowered to raise concerns about safety and have multiple outlets to voice those concerns. Another way we ensure safety is by conducting a thorough pre-trip safety inspection which would address the concerns you listed. If there are additional ways that we can drive safety, I would encourage you to bring them up to your plant manager, your zone manager, or your HR resource. 2. In terms of pay, you are absolutely correct and echoed exactly what employees tell us they love most about our pay structure, the harder an employee works - the more dollars they will see. There is no cap on the amount an employee can make. I would encourage anyone interested to take a few moments to watch the following video describing our pay structure and its benefits: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzMcidU-82A 3. We are very proud of our benefit package and have benchmarked off other top employers. Every employee will have different needs and requirements for coverage. We understand that we can’t customize health insurance plans for each employees personal situation, however, we feel very good that our coverage is highly competitive in both coverage and in price. Please reach out to your HR representative if you have any questions regarding insurance. 4. The majority of our route drivers won’t work many nights (if any). We are a seasonally driven business and there can be long days in the summer. For those instances, we offer extra bonuses for employees that delivers a certain number of bags of ice. This is in addition to a drivers commission rate, providing them with an opportunity to make more money and rewarding them for a hard day’s work. Our hiring philosophy is to hire supervisors and managers from our current workforce which is the ultimate investment in our employees. Over 95% of our management team came from delivering ice, including our leadership team. We also have a tuition reimbursement for employees who are taking college courses and pay for employees to train and take their CDL. We also provide a higher commission rate for employees that get their CDL as an extra reward. I hope this response helped!

Pros

Fast paced and if you’re mechanically inclined it’s lots of fun coming to work and watching the employees grown and help each other meet the aspects. By the end of the year it’s never fun to see the season end

Cons

First week you will get sore
