Pros

First, there is great pay. With a high school diploma and no experience, at age 19, Home City Ice payed for my class B CDL. It is a commission based job, so the harder I work, the more money comes my way. I averaged about 23-25 dollars/hour. My best 12 day paycheck was $2180 after taxes. Second, there is an incredible amount of autonomy in the job. There is a list of stops to hit, but past that, work as fast or slow as you want and the way you do your job is pretty much up to you. Third, there are a lot of benefits that come from the company caring a lot about its employees. The bosses are friendly and understanding. During the hottest/busiest days of summer, the company supplied Gatorade, water, and catered lunches for employees. In addition, I am going to college, and the company has a tuition reimbursement program that I am taking advantage of.

Cons

Some of the bad things about working there include long hours sometimes, and working during holidays. Depending on the weather and time of the week, there are a lot of long days. Longer days usually don’t bother me all that much because they go quickly and they mean that I am making bank that day. I worked one 12.5 hour day this summer but I also made $324. It just depends on your priorities, I don’t have a wife or family. The other bad thing about it is that holiday weekends are mandatory. Memorial Day weekend, 4th of July, and Labor Day are the busiest ice-selling days of the year, so naturally plan to work those. Once again, usually doesn’t bother me because I make more money those days. I guess one last con is that it would be incredibly hard for smaller people to be able to do this job due to its physical nature. Most, but not all, of the employees I worked with are men who played sports in high school and are above average size and muscular.

Pros

Fast paced and if you’re mechanically inclined it’s lots of fun coming to work and watching the employees grown and help each other meet the aspects. By the end of the year it’s never fun to see the season end

Cons

First week you will get sore

Open road, somewhat flexible in how you choose to go about your daily route

Cons

No air conditioning (brutal when it's 100 degrees out and you have a long route through rural areas), faulty equipment that can be unsafe
