Pros

Pretty straightforward work. No having to plan lessons as all of the curriculum is done for you. The students range in age from 3 years to early 20's, so if you are pursuing an education path you can determine the age group that is a best fit for you. One of the main benefits of working at a learning center as opposed to independent tutoring is that if a child doesn't get the desired results, the center specialists deal with the frustrated parents, not you. Also, the staff was very willing to write recommendation letters for me as I applied to grad school and the public school system.

Cons

If you already know which age group you work best with, you will still have to work with EVERYONE. Let's just put it this way - someone who is good with toddlers won't work well with teens, and vice versa. With the low wages and number of hours, the job won't pay your bills on its own. A center might charge a parent $80 for an hour of math tutoring; the tutor who works with the child *might* see $10 of that. I mentioned in the pros about not having to deal with angry parents, but on the flip side of that, you are actually prohibited from communicating with parents in any way. The curriculum is extremely outdated (like 70's and 80's) and the centers have no interest in updating it. Worst of all, my particular center had (and still has, so I hear) money issues and has repeatedly failed to pay employees on time. Last I heard they were officially one month behind in getting paychecks out. One day I got a voicemail instructing me to find my pay, in cash, in the director's desk...WTF?

Huntington Learning Centers Response

We appreciate the time you took to leave this review, but are disappointed you did not have an optimal experience. Please allow me to address some of your feedback - (1) We encourage students to work with all different tutors in an effort to foster their independence. (2) The pay rate is something that is shared with candidates and agreed to before the working partnership begins. The rate is comparable to that of a substitute teacher. All the lessons are prepared for you, there is no homework to grade, all you need to do is show up and teach! (3)Our managers are responsible for all parent communication. The purpose is to ensure that feedback is centralized and controlled. (4) Our curriculum is traditional. While there are elements of the text that may be outdated, the fundamentals of each lesson remain effective and relevant. Again, we appreciate your insights and should you have any other feedback, do not hesitate to contact me directly at RotinoJ@hlcmail.com.
