Pros

I was in the Advance Pricing Agreements program formerly run by IRS Counsel's office but now under the Commissioner of Revenue. There was a great professionalism and collegiality at the work place and we had a good bit of professional independence in handling our cases. I learned a lot during the first five years and enjoyed my work very much.

Cons

As the program expanded, the level of bureaucracy increased and moves towards standardization of our work product took away from the satisfaction one derived from work. This got worse (more bureaucratic) when the program was moved under the Commissioner of Revenue and from what I hear, the level of morale is pretty low.

Pros

It's lost a lot of the perks that drew me in the first place. The floor level people are very supportive of one another. But that's human nature.

Cons

The management is, in a reciprocation of the trope, an 'old girls club.' The criteria for those that want to get in is to 'not be threatening or easily controlled'. Everyone else is either forced out through the coordinated gatekeeping of the club, or waited out as most of the management is a temporary assignment. For the past two years I've been promised help and guidance, and I receive none. It's hard to be willing to help on special assignments when I'm punished for doing them in the first place.
