Extremely Unstable Company - Genetic Counselor Invitae Employee Review

Pros

- very bright teammates, truly the best group of genetic counselors I've ever worked with - important patient-care driven mission which until 2022 felt genuine from the top down (no longer true under new leadership) - great work-life balance and very good benefits (caveat being that you can't count on these benefits as layoffs are always around the corner - this is a really big deal if your family relies on your benefits)

Cons

-terrible middle-upper management -a culture of sloppy integration of acquired companies/products (the board should all be replaced given their terrible stewardship) -chaotic mass layoff (the hours spent in Org1 were a complete waste given layoffs were apparently based on getting rid of the highest paid employees- including extremely dedicated and talented people- so short sighted) -waste of talent due to extreme siloing of teams- so many experienced and creative thinkers were told to "stay in their lane" to the detriment of the company- a small handful of people made all decisions leading to many missed opportunities for improvement, very little communication across teams, major issues with "leaders" being gatekeepers of information -frequent re-orgs and shifts in priority meant projects were frequently cancelled after lots of resources had already been spent- I've never seen such waste (both monetary and of human capital) -serious concerns about integrity of lab products moving forward -complete lack of regard for employees once they have decided to get rid of you (for example multiple pregnant employees were laid off, including people who were on maternity leave at the time of their separation date- good luck finding a new job quickly, and good luck taking care of yourself and your family when you lose your health insurance immediately postpartum)

Growth at any cost without the infrastructure to support it led to burnout in a lot of places.
