Pros

The people I worked with, who came from diverse backgrounds, and the ability to work in other languages were really the only pros of this job.

Cons

In short, everything else. The pay was abysmal, despite years of service, abilities in multiple languages beyond English, and a graduate degree. In fact, the pay was so poor that only the threat of an all-out riot by staff was sufficient to raise the pay ceiling for long-term employees when the minimum wage was raised locally. I was told that this was an entry-level position which would allow movement within the company, but in all the time I was there, virtually no one from the department was promoted to other departments, and internal positions actually went to people from other departments despite plenty of talent to choose from. Although the job was 40+ hours a week, after several years with the company, we were told that we were not full-time employees; rather, the company used loopholes to treat us as part-time so they could send us home if there was insufficient work. As a result, we also did not receive the same benefits or even days off as salaried staff in other departments. The department does a lot of liaising with other departments and I often had to deal with belligerent client service or project managers from other departments - making much better salaries - to explain details of their own jobs to them. Generally speaking, CSs and PMs were ill-prepared or inexperienced, but myself and my colleagues often bore the brunt of their incompetence.

The Coder position is a variable hourly position with morning and evening shifts available Monday thru Saturday. The hours are project driven and we are transparent with all applicants in the hiring process that hours can, and will, vary based on project load. There are also times when work is extremely heavy and Coders wishing to work overtime hours are paid at time and a half according to provincial legislation. The hiring wage is in accordance with the provincial minimum wage and we do pay a premium for those who can code in another language. The Coding employees have the opportunity to earn annual merit increases. We do recognize that we employ individuals with higher levels of education, and while this is not a prerequisite for coding, it may be required for other opportunities open within the company. The Coding employees have the opportunity to participate in company programs such as a group benefits plan, milestone recognition, employee recognition programs and a summer hours program. Nevertheless, we do acknowledge that there are some benefits that are not included in the hourly program. Increased benefits will be provided as you become more senior in the company as part of an inclusive compensation package. The Coding department does have a career path and the Management team works diligently to promote from within – there have been 5 promotions to date this year in the Winnipeg office with Coders and Head Coders moving in to Head Coder and Team Leader roles respectively. That being said, there are times when it is necessary to look outside the department to fill more senior roles.

Pros

Plenty of opportunities and various locations

Cons

You work your tail off using gas, mileage, time, energy, tolls, and consistent but the authenticator who sit in the comfort of their home find any and everything wrong with the survey you fill out. Then, you don't get paid. Their portal that you are supposed to use while on location has connectivity issues or whatever reason they decide to blame it on. So far, I've lost $500.00 with this company. There are many other mystery shopping companies who don't try to cheat you out of money. If I had to guess, they use your pictures and get THEIR money but won't pay their contractors. I would suggest shopping for any other company besides Ipsos!
