Pros
Being an adjunct instructor is educational, rewarding, and fulfilling. I really love teaching, even more than I thought I would, and the students are great. My department head gives me a lot of support, and the Ivy Tech community is welcoming and engaging. Plus, it's a real resume enhancer to list "Professor" on your resume, and adjunct instructors can take Ivy Tech classes for free, which is a nice benefit.
Cons
Teaching, even as an adjunct, is a big commitment. There's a lot of work outside of class in designing course materials, preparing for lectures, coaching students, and grading assignments. Teaching one eight-week course pays $2,268, which works out to a low hourly figure. It also involves a lot of public speaking, which many people find challenging.
