Great place to begin right out of college. Stay longer than a year at your own peril! - Faculty Manager Kaplan Employee Review

Pros

Flexible full time hours, especially now that every one works from home. The health insurance was pretty good, too. Lastly, getting time off from work proves to be fairly easy, but really you have to be accessible all the time via phone/email.

Cons

The company has been going through major reorganization since 2010. Hundreds of employees have been laid off, and it still isn't over. Most people who have remained post reorg are now working 3-4 jobs in one and from home. 90% of Kaplan offices have been closed for good. Faculty managers are now expected to teach and train in order to defend "the need" for their positions in the company. In other words, your job can/will be eliminated without any notice. Moreover, regional managers have very little "hands on" responsibility, yet they command the highest salaries. They seem to make it through each round of lay offs with flying colors. On average, you can expect to make about 35-40k in these positions, with yearly raises of 500-1000 ( if you are lucky.) The only way you can really advance salary wise is if you're on the sales/marketing side of things. If you're an academic, with no direct access to bringing more dollars to the company, you're pretty low on the value scale. What is perhaps the most frustrating part about this job is that change happens over night, and as faculty manager you are expected to understand these changes and then explain them to your faculty overnight, literally. We are the messengers, of usually pretty bad news ( ie, no overtime pay, no compensation for travel, pay cuts), but more often than not we either hate the changes or fail to fully understand them ourselves. Still we have to sell these changes as being "good for everyone."

Pros

Good remote environment while not having a lot of micromanagement.

Cons

It's very hard to advance. Promotions seem very hand picked instead of basing them on merits.
