Pros

Flexible schedule; great opportunity to get experience teaching; teaches useful strategies for tests; pays for time spent preparing for lessons

Cons

In San Diego, it is generally agreed that teaching for Kaplan is not a good job for anyone who requires regular and stable income. I would only suggest the position to a student who is looking for a little extra income for a limited amount of time. The longer instructors work for Kaplan (unless they are one of the rare full-time employees), the harder it becomes to get enough hours to sustain a modest living. New hires get a class right after training, but those are classes taken away from experienced instructors who have achieve higher pay rates. Almost all raises are temporary, and it is incredibly difficult to receive hours during the term of your raise. Kaplan will constantly hire new instructors even though its veteran instructors are not receiving the desired amount of hours, or sometimes even any hours at all. This is NOT a good place to work long-term. Do not expect to receive more than 10 hours a week. Do not expect to earn more money the longer you work!
