Pros

I agree w/a lot of reviews already on here - read the ones marked helpful. A lot of your experience depends on what department you're in and who your managers are. Pay not as good as private sector, but you only have to work 40 hours.

Cons

Leadership tone can really be set by the Exec - which is why I'm surprised Dow Constantine is rated so highly. He's done a good job marketing himself (and planting reviews here?). Under his leadership, bureaucratic waste has increased exponentially - which is ironic given that he supposedly is making the county government Lean. His staff sets rules and makes decisions based on what will make him look good politically and in the media - but they never gather any information from front-line employees before they institute huge changes (and a lot of them - anyone doing change management up there?) so most of the initiatives create more work instead of a "better run government".

Pros

Came to Rail from another division in the county, so much better than certain customer facing divisions. Work like balance and hybrid model are great. Lots of room for advancement in the admin world if you want it.

Cons

Can feel like you’re being micro managed or watched from the top at times but middle management is usually good at mitigating this.
