Pros

MIT is an interesting and stimulating place to work. There are always new things happening, and employees are generally invited to become part of the community and participate in events. You will meet a lot of interesting people at MIT.

Cons

In some ways, some of the administrative departments are unstable, constantly shifting with the sands. In my time there, I had eight different supervisors and worked in four different departments, all while performing similar functions. Considering that I was essentially doing the same work in all of these departments, the working conditions varied considerably. I had both wonderful and horrible bosses. I had extensive career advancement opportunities in some departments, and felt squelched in others. MIT is not one employer, it is many, and they are all different, good and bad.

Pros

High quality core facilities and well resourced labs. Countless brilliant colleagues who can serve as mentors and collaborators

Cons

Students and Postdocs are expensive due to high overhead, so unreasonably high productivity is often expected compared to other institutions. PIs are typically stretched very thin. Most departments/labs are very space limited which makes it harder to do safe and productive research.
