Pros

Fabulously stimulating place to work and to be. Adventurous, willing to take chances. Very good benefits (although that has eroded some with the changes in the US economy).

Cons

On the administrative side, you can take chances but risk losing trust and access if anything goes wrong. Extreme stratification in wealth, increasingly reflecting US and world economy. Raises at senior level can approach 20% a year while 3% is allocated for rest. The usual, "We're adults; employees act like children" attitude among senior managers -- although management teams are often the most infantile in how they conduct themselves.

Pros

High quality core facilities and well resourced labs. Countless brilliant colleagues who can serve as mentors and collaborators

Cons

Students and Postdocs are expensive due to high overhead, so unreasonably high productivity is often expected compared to other institutions. PIs are typically stretched very thin. Most departments/labs are very space limited which makes it harder to do safe and productive research.
