Pros

If you work in the tech centers there are flexible work arrangements, reward outside the box thinking and encourage creativity. However if you work in the project/customer facing departments there is an entirely different mentality (see cons). There are really great problems to work on challenges for the federal government, and if you aren't happy on one project, most managers help you move to other projects as needed. Some people like that its a non-profit.

Cons

Some managers are really old school and at times the company moves just as slowly, ineffectively and painfully as the government. Since they took 30 years to get where they are, they try to hold employees back with the mentality they also need to "pay their time". This is inconsistent across the company, but you have to know which type of department you're getting hired into. Aim for the tech centers instead of the projects/programs departments, they are more innovative. Benefits like flex time and other conveniences are also not allowed for employees in a standardized way, though they are advertised by the company, it is manager dependent. There is also this strange scramble at the end of the govt fiscal year to make people take time off or work more to try and spend their budgets exactly down to the dollar. Then at the beginning of a new year, people get dropped from projects and are expected to find new work when there aren't openings... no way to manage people.

MITRE Response

We're glad you enjoyed diverse array of work here. As we partner with government sponsors, we work hard to ensure that we help them find the right solutions to their challenges. We try to manage benefits and flextime as equitably to all employees as possible. There are some cases where that is more difficult, such as when employees work on highly sensitive programs and may not be able to work from home. However, we compensate these employees with flexibility in other ways.

Pros

Great diversity, quality of life and staff. Been with MITRE over 20 years.

Cons

Too many VP,s that are not held accountable. Company recently RIF'd 24 staff from FAA FFRDC, due to dropping gov't funding...yet company has significant number of VPs all sucking off of overhead. No attempt to manage money within the "leadership" ranks. Last year company went through a major business transformation...that failed...yet, VPs held staff accountable for reporting on a subpar system that lasted over 12 months. Could not even get business data to report to gov't for over 2 months, yet, person who was in charge of the business transformation is still at MITRE. If this happened to any other MITRE employee, they would've been gone. Oddly enough the person in charge of the business transformation is the CEOs brother. Amazing how that happens. He'll probably get a bonus because of his substandard performance. MITRE recently invested in opening up an office in Australia. All on company overhead. significant large numbers of VPs travelling out to "visit"...yet company has the audacity to reduce benefits as part of cost cutting measures. Company has now taken on a "for profit" mentality. It's all about delivery... so VPS and GMs can spend, spend, spend. Board of Directors should take a good look at what is happening and make some swift changes from the CEO on down. BOD should also implement an independent IG like entity to investigate what is seeming like waste, fraud and abuse by CEO, GMs and VPs. Time for the Fat Cats to get purged!!!
