Pros

Employee discount works on top of sales and coupons Pays slightly above minimum wage Pick your own schedule/hours 45 minute lunch break most of the time

Cons

NO HOURS. I was brought on as a seasonal person back in October, and I knew, being seasonal, you basically pick up whatever hours no one wants, but there WEREN'T ANY HOURS AT ALL to pick up. I had a fuller work schedule in November than in December, even though they have more and more sales and longer work hours in December. That doesn't make any sense. Now I'm just wondering why they even bothered hiring me or anyone else, since it seems like only maybe 5 seasonal people are getting any shifts at all. Their training is awful, is well. All they teach is how to use the cash register - and also that Macy's is wonderful - and even then it's only really basic stuff that you aren't going to remember when you're on the floor anyway. (And you never work with ringing up real merchandise in training, just all these cards that have pictures drawn on them. And you have to pretend to be the customer and swipe their cards and sign for them, which you wouldn't be doing on the floor) The store's "customers first!" policy is also awful. I know you want happy customers to come back, and I think it's fine to appease an angry customer by giving them a free handled shopping bag (we have to charge here), or whatever, but I really hate how the store will go way over themselves to please a customer who is being ridiculous (it's not the cashier's fault your coupon won't work on EDV merchandise! And it says it won't work on EDV ON THE COUPON! It's not MY fault you left your bag in another department when I wasn't even on the floor yet, stop yelling at me!), while leaving the employees in the lurch. The manager/store's pushing on you to push the credit cards and Thanks For Sharing. Most of the people either 1) have a card already, 2) are only buying a couple cheap things and don't want to spend 10 minutes signing up for a card, 3) aren't going to get approved anyway, 4) already have Thanks For Sharing, or 5) signed up for Thanks For Sharing last year and didn't think it was worth it so don't want to sign up this year. They look at your statistics for how many accounts or TFS you opened if you want to stay on after the holidays. But it's so hard, especially if you're young and inexperienced and aren't comfortable yelling at people that they should open a card while you've got a long line of people and the phone is ringing and you forgot how to open a new account anyway.

Pros

Insurance benefits, pto, sick days

Cons

Micromanagement and favoritism made it difficult to enjoy work. Environment felt tense rather than encouraging. I often felt like I was being watched and criticized. Company claims “work-life balance” but scheduling was frustrating and employees had little over their schedules. They would often adjust or change your schedule without your permission. Management picks and chooses who they want to help and if they dislike you, they will make work unbearable and not let you grow. Every attendance issue was heavily scrutinized and made me feel like I was one mistake from getting in trouble. Management does not care about its employees and you are just a number to them. Productivity and metrics mattered more than employees wellbeing.
