Pros
Mathematica is full of intelligent and kind people, many of whom seem to genuinely care about their jobs. It is an mission driven and employee-owned company so there is rarely any tension between employee well-being and corporate profit margins. The research portfolio is wide-ranging and employees are encouraged to involve themselves in different topics and methodologies. The company provides ample room for growth for junior employees.
Cons
Mathematica charges its client a high rate, which means there is a lot of pressure to deliver excellent research products within the budget. It's common for junior staff to put in well over 40 hours per week, but this effort usually goes unacknowledged. Compensation seems low considering the length of the workweek and level of education required. Mathematica leadership talks a good game about DEI, but every hiring wave seems to fall short of our stated values.
