Toxic work culture-horrible HR practices-age discrimination-holier than thou complex of Sr. Leadership. Mayo Clinic has established itself as the world leader in healthcare for over 160+ years. This prominence is a result of their unique triad leadership structure, inclusive of clinical leaders working with administrative leaders in partnership with nursing leaders. In my 20 years working across multiple departments in Rochester, MN and Jacksonville, FL, I have seen the culture inside Mayo erode significantly, especially in the past 7 years under the leadership of Dr. Gianrico Farrugia. There is significant loss of “Pride in Work” and commitment to Mayo Clinic across all levels of staff. This is driven largely by Mayo’s consistent pattern of eliminating jobs, requiring staff to reapply for their existing job under the guise of “Strategic Realignment”. This occurs regularly across many departments and is repeated over years in a cyclical manner (I’ve had to reapply for my exact same job 3 times in the past 8 years). In this process, Mayo targets older, more tenured staff for layoff, favoring younger, less experienced (and lower paid) candidates. You can research how many employee lawsuits have been filed against Mayo in recent years for retaliatory acts against employees. There is also growing concern internally over the performance and authenticity of reported outcomes from alternative business revenue sources across the institution (i.e. the performance of AI tools and the advancement of Mayo Clinic Platform, which has reported losses in excess of $50 million for the past seven years). Employees often have others ask about opportunities to work for Mayo Clinic - 15 years ago, I would have raved about the possibilities with the organization, but today, I discourage folks from trying to secure a job at Mayo due to the toxic culture and lack of job security, even for those who excel in their performance.
