Pros

-60% discount on hospital services including medications for when your pet has to be seen -20-30% of the doctors and staff are the best people you’ll ever meet.

Cons

-out of touch “leadership” team who focus on sweeping changes or new programs/initiatives that aren’t discussed post-commencement (patient safety committee was apparently started before I began working here and I haven’t heard any follow up), using a rounding paper for patients that no one 100% loves but hasn’t been changed or updated in months—someone is apparently on working on this but I’ve heard people saying that for months now, “connecting” with their employees but are rarely boots-on-the-ground fixing major issues (“retriaging” ER patients more often instituted last year?—never happens, hospital is falling apart and was just built/updated a year ago I think?, low standards when it comes to cleanliness of patient spaces, etc.), and are the same people who don’t know how to do half the things they’re attempting to change. There are a few exceptions to the leadership teams but we never see the upper leadership save for a couple of them and the Clinical Supervisor role is confusing despite it being discussed in multiple meetings. —essentially the pay is for you to be not only a veterinary assistant, but an IT fixer (have to put in tickets and follow up with them while you care for animals), a facilities person (another ticket system for if you’re the lucky one to notice something is wrong with the building or anything in it- there is always something wrong with it), financial guru—how to charge for services is constantly changing AND train/entertain multiple groups of people—the hospital has high school students being taught by staff, vet tech students being taught by staff, and new hires being taught by staff—and the employees here barely (BARELY) make enough to survive on the hourly wage if they’re in a single income household 🤯🤯🤯 —they pretend there is room for growth but (and this is partially the industry) there’s no fostering of this unless you spend time outside of work doing so —if you’re not a registered technician you have to spend your own money to do any of the prestigious certifications that would help in your role (RECOVER, Fear Free, Compassion Fatigue Prevention, etc.)

Pros

The staff at the Commerce MedVet have been very supportive and helpful with teaching me the skills I was previously lacking. I got my first feline jugular blood draw and I was also given great tips about IV catheter placement.

Cons

I have no cons, the staff are very welcoming and if you want to learn they want to teach.
