Pros
Staff is friendly. Great facility. Flexibility for PRN/per diem employees. Decent hiring process. Very involved CEO, CNO... Etc. Non-hostile workplace.
Cons
The title of "Nurse Extern" is taken lightly. The job is no different than that of a regular PCA. You have to fight for learning opportunities on the job but chances are the nurses don't have time to teach you. They're extremely busy and flustered themselves. This is not a structured program for nursing students to learn, unlike many proper nursing externships across the country. It is simply a tactic by management to lure nursing students into job purely as assistants in nature as they have an extreme shortage of PCAs. If presented to me as a PCA job, I would have had an idea of what I was getting myself into. And perhaps decent pay. Nurse Externs are paid less than PCAs (also unlicensed and inexperienced) for the same care given. Even just the same pay would be acceptable.
