The pay was not great ($40k), and administration made clear that the university's primary goal was to make money. All non-tenured/tenure track faculty were considered expendable, and the university wasted no time in cutting around 200 lecturers the moment they had the chance. Rumours of increased teaching loads (uncompensated, of course) were already circulating months before the COVID crisis gave admins the excuse they needed to cut jobs.
