Pros
The benefits and salary are pretty good, with plenty of chances for overtime, but you work every day on ships at sea, usually at a high operational capacity. When you pull into port, you're normally very busy as well. There's a trade off. After you pass your probationary period, it's very hard to get fired. This is a U.S. government job, so unless you really screw up...
Cons
Poor work/life balance. People that know what they're getting into expect this, but it can be rough for people that don't. Late reliefs is a serious problem for some jobs.
