Pros

Campuses are conveniently located. Some nice faculty members who share your pain.

Cons

They are all smiles when they hire you- which is usually out of desperation because Adjuncts quit on them all the time. But once you get in, the conniving behavior, the vindictiveness, and the undermining begins. You realize quickly that you were not told truth about the depths of the challenges you will face with students who are not ready for college (some with serious and unaddressed cognitive issues), and who have severe behavioral problems. Then when you dare reach out for help and attempt to address the issues, they use it against you to make it look like you are a horrible professor. They expect you to push students through your classes who shouldn't. If you fail students, they blame you instead of the students who barely came to class, stayed on their cellphones in class, missed tests, never turned in assignments. And if they did turn them in, they were done so carelessly that they weren't worth submitting. There were students who have cursed out professors and threatened them physically. But you will get zero support from the "directors," who are only concerned with keeping their jobs. They will backstab you and ruin your name within the institution if you dare attempt to do your job and address issues. If you are not passing along horrible students and kissing butt (who even has time for that with all of the constant student drama?), then you are blacklisted. They will have the nerve to blame you for hundreds of years of racial oppression that has impacted minorities in this country, and 12 years of unequal and neglectful public education for minority children. They will have the nerve to look you in the face (as a member of the same racial/ethnic group who also suffers from the same oppression not caused by you) and have the nerve to blame you when you don't correct the impact of America's centuries-long racism and unequal educational system in 15 weeks. This will be even more nefarious when it is being told to you by a person in a position of power in the school who is also a member of the dominate racial group in America. While I can't speak for other directors. The one I had was not supportive - and was vindictive and sneaky. And at the end of the day, it is the students who suffer when they lose talented and dedicated faculty because of their own insecurities. But then, is it really about the students - or about the money? You have to dumb down everything in order for the majority of students to pass. You realize quickly that they will not pass if you don't do this. No one will acknowledge this in public. But everyone talks about it in private. And don't ever ask these sneaky administrators for help with anything. They will use it against you.

Pros

There are few amazing students.

Cons

Management is downright toxic. They thrive on pitting employees against each other and crushing any spark of innovation. If you dare to suggest an idea, you’re treated like a nuisance instead of valued. Salaries are insultingly low, yet they expect you to grind away endless hours as if your life belongs to them. The leadership is selfish, greedy, and completely indifferent to rewarding or recognizing the people who actually keep the place running.
