Cliched, stereotypical government job - IT Employee Multnomah County Employee Review

Pros

Slow pace. Very low expectations. Failures are tolerated. Any technical knowledge is impressive to your peers. High pay with no productivity expectation. Seemingly limitless funds at all levels; purchase requests are rarely denied and budgets never reduced. Smart phone and laptop are provided freely to IT employees. Very social culture. Lots of down time. Managers take personal interest in their employees (they have little power with them professionally, so they are more like peers than reports.)

Cons

Slow pace. Very low expectations. Failures are expected. Success is overlooked and under appreciated. Very low tech for IT. There are many retirement-age employees who have never worked anywhere else and know nothing of industry standards or modern practices. Retirement is the only attrition factor since nobody is terminated, ever. Efficiency is frowned upon since the retention and growth of staff are a priority. Projects can take years to complete and budget is never a factor. Over-staffing fosters a "hot-potato" environment without initiative. Seemingly uncontrolled spending can appear as a blatant waste of taxpayer money, without any apparent oversight or auditing. It can be hard to watch the continuous, ill-advised software acquisitions, rapid-fire hiring and consultancy purchasing.

Love the fantastic benefits and the yearly cost of living increases

Union contract negotiations move slowly so the annual increases can talk a while to be in effect

Pros

Like anywhere you work. If you have a good boss then this place is okay. Management is clueless in regards to technology and have zero incentive to learn.

Cons

Technology is improving but IT department gets incentives to say no to you. Simple things take forever because no one in IT has ever actually worked in a real IT company.
