Spinning off from Murphy Oil started out well, but.... - Analyst Murphy USA Employee Review

Pros

Large portfolio of stores in 24 states and still growing; growth funded internally, so long-term debt is very manageable; lost cost operation fits in well with selected geographic locations (WalMart parking lots and vicinity)

Cons

Too many forward-looking projects negatively impacting day-to-day operations; past culture of immediacy and aggressiveness being changed to careful (and most of the time plodding), multi-level meeting-dense approval process; almost all new hires coming from outside the company; by dragging feet on new WalMart agreement, WM has broken off talks and is now testing their own gas station concept

Pros

Fun coworkers, great customers. Regular customers who appreciate you and know it’s your job to ask for ID/upsell items. At my store, the manager will work around any day you need off so that is a big plus!

Cons

Some customers can be real PITAs and all around jerks. Sometimes it feels like we don’t get paid enough for what we do.

Pros

Good benefits. Fridays are half-days.

Cons

Terrible work culture straight out of the 90s that has never evolved. Low pay unless you're at the top. Sexism, various -phobias, pay discrimination, 'pizza days', the works. Lack of overtime is grounds for firing. Recently laid off 100 HO employees after acquiring a failing convenience store chain a dozen states away that ended up wasting a ton of money. Management that throws you under the bus. If you work really hard, you might get promoted after several years at your current level. Or you might not. Leaning hard into AI recently, which might not be a con for you, but is for everyone at MUSA currently using it.
