Pros
The company is not afraid to embrace new technology but has some old entrenched mind sets that will hamper some areas. Since energy is necessary for our civilization working for an energy company is useful and beneficial. Some of the technology that is adopted is near cutting edge and is ground breaking in it's use, but it is sometimes behind the scenes so the public is not aware of it.
Cons
NRG Energy was initially a wholesale power distributor that provided power to other power distributors or large industrial customers, with no contact with retail customers. After buying Reliant Energy, they suddenly had thousands of employees in a non-power plant environment and thousands of retail customers and they were not used to this. It took a while for the company to integrate the new employees into their environment. NRG was one of the few companies that I know of that did not have a internal web site set up to allow employees to access company benefits and information like looking up W2, emergency contact information, etc. They did not have a retail oriented mindset and it took them a while to become more consumer oriented.
