Pros

Access to a wide variety of learning experiences outside of education focus (i.e., if your degree was in mammalogy, you will also get experience in botany). Many branch offices across the U.S.

Cons

The business structure is such that there is little to no room for advancement. Pay is based on office location but is frequently not commensurate with location or education; they require college degrees but barely pay above minimum wage and annual pay increases don't even cover a 3% cost of living increase. This (and the toxic work environments in many branch offices) has led to a pattern of scientists leaving after only a couple years. The business does not seem to value quality data; lead scientists of the project had not even discussed how and where to store raw data 3 years after collections had begun. After working "on the inside" for several years, as a scientist I would not trust any data this company releases; it's free to the public, so in this regard the adage is true: you get what you pay for. NSF should be more vigilant in their oversight reviews. Get in for the experience and resume padding, then get out! Your time is worth more than they are willing to pay you, and your education and experience are worth more than they are willing to recognize.
