The benefits include the ability to work remotely and the pay is not bad.
Cons
The worst university I have worked for, and I have worked for four brick-and-mortars and one other online university. The leadership is comprised essentially of lawyers whose sole mission is to increase profits. Faculty members have absolutely no voice (NCU was forced to create a faculty senate, but only for accreditation - it has no power and was designed that way). If a faculty member voices skepticism or does not agree with leadership, leadership looks for (or invents) cause for termination. Faculty member conversations using their assigned 800 numbers are monitored surreptitiously. Their game is essentially this: students are rubber-stamped through their general and research coursework, often with a 4.0 GPA (which is meaningless) - this is where they make their money - and then they attempt to backstop the process with an Academic Success Center. Students arrive to their Dissertation Chair never having received real feedback or being held to any standard and almost all are completely unprepared to conduct doctoral level dissertation research. Students then have three courses to complete a component of the dissertation or they are dismissed. If you have ethical standards and believe in academic integrity and rigor, think twice about NCU - I wish I had.
