Pros
Working with the families and their children is difficult emotionally, but the benefits are more than worth it. Some of the physicians are friendly and support the staff no matter what level of the department they are working in (housekeeping up to fellow physicians).
Cons
Very high turn over rate, pay is not competitive with other hospitals in the area, no holiday pay (you must use your PTO), no maternity leave (yep no maternity leave in a children's hospital), raises are of maximum 3% and that is only if you perform at what management considers above average so you can also be given less, management is unprofessional and cliquey, lateral violence is rampant among a large majority of the nurses as well as the non clinical staff, I witnessed and was the recipient of racism, sexual harassment, unethical practices, harassment, and homophobia. As a non RN in this organization you are basically treated as a disposable employee. The hospital goes above and beyond to protect it's nurses no matter what offenses they may have done, including jeopardizing patient health. Because management must hold a nursing degree, they often side with the nursing staff and consider complaints to be "making waves". Many of my legitimate concerns were not addressed and in contrast were pinned back to me. Any hard work you do will be overlooked and ideas are often accredited to management who did not originally conceive them. Make one mistake? Expect management to solely focus on your short coming instead of utilizing the moment to make these opportunities to uplift you. HR is also not going to be of any help. As mentioned in many other reviews, HR will always side with management and will not address your concerns. If you happen to have the audacity to bring things up the ladder to HR, you will be met with anger and backlash once you return to your department as there is no transparency in the process.
