In my experience, a complete joke - Mechanical Engineer Naval Sea Systems Command Employee Review

Pros

If you served in the military, you can do no wrong. Sycophantic behavior is rewarded here. Your job title is technically " Engineer", so you can tell your mother that.

Cons

If you are talented in any way, or ambitious, do not go here. If you are not a white man, do not go here (I say that as a white man). It is a cesspool of some of the worst graduates that schools have to offer, and toxic leadership without the faintest of clues. I don't know what led you here, but whatever it was, it was wrong. Steer clear unless you just want to punch a clock, put in your hours and collect a paycheck for a welfare-like lifestyle. If you didn't serve in the military, you will be behind here. You may be blackballed to the point where all opportunity, responsibility and resources are taken away from you, with no opportunity to further your career. Your career here is in the hands of one person: your manager. You are at the whim of their emotions. Professionalism is not a consideration in this universe. This place has some of the worst and most widespread favoritism I've ever seen, and some of the most self-important leadership. It almost feels like a family business considering how many children of employees work there. Ask yourself why that would happen with such frequency. The culture: no humility, no curiosity, no desire to solve real problems. In the unfortunate case that you join, you have two options: 1) see how bad it is for yourself and get a different job within 1-2 years, or 2) stay here the rest of your life. Your professional skills will atrophy with the lack of work and decent mentorship. Once you make ~80k here, it will be almost impossible to make that in the real-world with your skillset. You will have to take a pay cut to work for a real company, and that may be the end for your life outside of these golden handcuffs. Such is life on the dole. If you have an ounce of self-respect, do not do it. The tax dollars that go to this place would make any person cry.
