A decent place to start, difficult to move up in a timely fashion. - Senior Software Engineer Netsmart Employee Review

Pros

This is an average/good place to start a career in technology, project management, or software engineering. The college grad starting pay is decent and if you work hard you'll likely be railroaded toward a natural career progression with a promotion or two. Also, the people are generally nice, executive leadership are generally respectful and visionary, and middle management understands the business well. As a college grad I was grateful they were willing to take me in and give me a chance to prove myself and jumpstart my career.

Cons

Software engineers can be spread a little too thin at times on certain teams, leading to small teams of ~5 engineers managing a weekly support rotation. This makes completing development work almost impossible approx. one week per month. Unfortunately, support was on-call as well, which would lead to you getting called after business hours on weekdays or even in the midnight hours on weekends and having to stay on until the client issue was resolved. Additionally, the career progression for those starting their career (at least on the SWE path) starts to stagnate after the first promotion or two. During my time here, I reached the title of senior SWE within 2 years. After that, there were people ahead of me that had been with the company for 8 years that still did not have the next promotion in line (software architect). Raises outside of promotions were also very small, barely commensurate with inflation, and there were no bonuses. This makes Netsmart harder to recommend to more junior SWEs hoping to rapidly progress in their career and their compensation level. I would say Netsmart tends to focus on saving money on payroll rather than paying more competitively to retain existing talent. Finally, on-job training can sometimes be incomplete because your tech leads will be so busy with their own work. You will often be working on very antiquated healthcare messaging protocols that have sparse or poor documentation. It can be difficult to make progress on certain development items until the "veterans" on your team make time to help you learn.

Pros

-Upper management on this team is incredible. -Flexible Paid Time Off(Pro and Con) -Very good at easing newcomers into corporate life. -Management actually values and considers input even from an associate with less experience.

Cons

Pay is not great, but definitely a decent chance of getting good bumps if you put in the work. Benefits are just okay. Flexible Paid Time Off(Pro and Con)

Pros

The team I work with is dedicated and loyal to the company and takes an ownership mentality.

Cons

If you care, you’ll give up your nights, your weekends, your blood, sweat, tears, joy, you’ll miss family events, even health appointments, your house will fall apart, your relationships will suffer, and you might even get asked to shorten your time away. There is nobody in the positions of the right help, and far too many managers, and too many per diem who have other jobs that can’t give enough hours but hold per diem positions hostage. When you ask for help, it’s always answered with a “We are trying”. Yet it’s been years of asking and the ask still falls on deaf ears. The company is missing opportunities to grow a huge revenue stream because they won’t create structure and processes; and positions to manage those structures. There are so many missed opportunities here, in a field that really needs us. I don’t know how to make my voice louder. It’s just not heard. We are top heavy in management. We need certain tasks completed, and are not getting what we need, no matter how many meetings we have about it. In fact, I don’t have time for the meetings anymore. We didn’t even celebrate Nurse’s Week. Not a single person even mentioned it. They work you to within an ounce left of your sanity, and then there’s absolutely no recognition or cohesiveness or celebration of any achievmemts instead, it’s “We didn’t make our quota.”. It’s all hurry up and get your work done, but then slow down because you’re making mistakes. Pay is mediocre for this level of experience and expertise-non-management level positions elsewhere offer far more in salary. Plus all the money you’ll spend to try to get things done just to manage your life, like paying for grocery delivery because you’ll never see the inside of a grocery store again. It’s madness. Not a sustainable career.
