Pros

Decent benefits with very good PTO, if your manager happens to be one of the few who allows you to actually take time off. Nice facilities.

Cons

Just a few years ago, New America was a decent place to work. But ever since Anne-Marie Slaughter took over as CEO the places has gone steadily, and sometimes dramatically, downhill. When I left it was a disaster of mismanagement, discrimination, and a complete lack of transparency. The CEO is completely absent, leaving both day-to-day operations and big decisions in the hands of incompetent directors and managers, most of whom are white men. Lower level staff is horribly overworked, underpaid and underappreciated. Promotions or opportunities to develop professionally are few and far between. Women, people of color, and LGBTQ are frequently discriminated against and are occasionally treated with cruelty. It's a toxic culture, with political infighting, jealousy, and gossip. The HR department that treats employees like children, as though every interaction is an exasperation. They have no concern for the well-being of the people who work there. If you have read this review, don't say you weren't warned. This is NOT a good place to work and all the sparkly offices and free snacks in the world can't change a dysfunctional management team filled with horrible people led by a CEO with no clue.

Pros

Experience as an employee is very dependent on host program/lab. Org structure supports policy, advocacy, and academic writers. No major top-down limitations which allows for depth of work across program areas (education, technology, benefits, etc).

Cons

Not great support from central comms for crisis communications.
