Pros
There are a lot of great people to work with, including many of the students. Some students and faculty are exceptionally good, which some may find surprising at a community college.
Cons
The drama: Politics, politics, politics. In-fighting between and within campuses. The heartbreak: Opportunities lost because it takes an act of I-don't-know-what to get even the smallest thing done at NVCC. By the time they get around to action, the window has closed. The tragedy: Human Resources fails to do its job in every possible way, continuously, in spite of a constant turnover and constant state of reshuffling. It's as if NVCC's sad philosophy is that if it did not work before, let's change people and positions around and continue to err the same way and see if the results are different. Also, there is the policy that adjuncts are not paid for labor (such as additional hours toward a specific project, i.e., advising) until several MONTHS after the work is done, in flagrant violation of Virginia employment law. NVCC's solution: stop hiring adjuncts to do those jobs and make full-time faculty do them, whether they want to or not. It's not just HR, but problems penetrate the entire organization. Anyone with the smallest authority runs their own fiefdom, and woe to someone who needs to work with them to get things done.
