Old school and typical, unfortunately - Actuary Pacific Life Employee Review

Pros

• As a mutual company, it is owned by its customers and officers. Having no stockholders allows for long-term view of business decisions and avoids haphazard reactions to quarterly earnings reports. • Good work-life balance due to stable, strongly regulated industry that discourages competition and a sales force incentivized to sell products to earn commissions. • Great to work in a beautiful location in CA. Many (life) insurance companies are headquartered in less desirable locations. • Some very good people, but you must seek them out and work to align yourself with them. Pays to ask people which are the good teams with good leadership; best to get thoughts from people who have had experiences outside of PL. If you can land on a team with a good manager, hold onto it and enjoy the positive work-life experience until you’re ready to develop in a different direction.

Cons

• Strong hierarchical separation between management and individual contributors. Overall attitude of superiority by management and disrespectful views of lower workers. • Poor quality coffee and food options at both CA offices. • Conservative company with conservative management. Large majority of white men promoted or hired into senior roles. Lip-service efforts made to diversity and inclusion, but no actionable changes and ultimately a non-inclusive environment for non-white, non-male employees. • Low expectations and little turnover result in culture that is complacent with long-tenured employees and no options for development or advancement. • Little-to-no development or emphasis placed on good management practices for new or mid-level managers. Worked in 5 different departments with each having a woman with a story of their male manager being disrespectful, unsupportive, or even abusive.

Pros

Great benefits and great team members!

Cons

The Return to Office policy is driving away one of our talented team members. Blindsided by reorgs. No polls done to determine what is best for our team.

Thank you for sharing your perspective and for recognizing the strength of your team and our benefits. Our in-office approach is designed to support collaboration and connection across teams, while still offering flexibility through one remote workday per week, along with our flexible workdays benefit, which allows for additional remote days throughout the year. Feedback like yours helps us continue learning how this is experienced day-to-day across different roles and teams. We appreciate you taking the time to share.
