Varies by department, but phenomenal experience for me. - Programmer Penn State Employee Review

Pros

12 hours paid vacation every month, plus 8 hours sick leave. Great benefits. Actually believes in the concept of professional development - people in my office are always taking time off for training seminars and software user group meetings. Since PSU is an educational institution, you know that you're working towards something positive Generally laid back (people in my department wear shorts and t-shirts to work)

Cons

Since it's an academic environment, there are definitely office politics. Management styles vary - Employees in my department love their jobs, but some of them were hired from other departments where they were miserable. Living in a college town can be very, very exhausting

Pros

They were very flexible with hours and it was a fun place to work. There was lots of downtime to do other things while on the clock, and an e-bike to get around campus quickly.

Cons

Toward the end they got pretty strict about keeping your computer on a certain tab to take online tickets, and you could get in trouble for not doing it. It’s tedious work overall.

Pros

flexibility. I'm on a fellowship I won with a great advisor. It is not so good for others.

Cons

An inherently liminal position with severely reduced benefits.
