Pros

I get to work with animals, which is a lot of fun! Not only the animals we have for sale, but all the neat animals pet parents bring in to show off: dogs, lizards, cats, etc. I also have made a lot of friends because we all share something in common - a love for animals. Because we are all friends the store as a whole has a wonderful atmosphere. For example, while closing one night one of the cashiers bought everyone a coke and a cookie from the sub shop next door, and when opening everyone loves to order lunch together from one of the restaurants nearby! We are always looking out for eachother. IHours are flexible which is good for anyone with a tight schedule.

Cons

It is a dirty job - in my department anyway (the fish, small animal, reptile, and bird) we get to mess with animal poo all the time. You are always on your feet, and customer service can be a bit hard when a customer does not understand that you are trying to help them as best as you can. Another downside in my department is animal death; death is a part of life, but it is always hard to have to deal with a death of one of our pets for sale. It is also frustrating sometimes to deal with mean animals, such as our current cockatiels and ball pythons. But this also has a plus side when your hard work in taming an animal comes through and you sell the animal as a sweet pet.

Pros

15% off whole store 50% proprietary brands Petting animals Friendly customers Almost never declines requested days off

Cons

Must have min one weekend day available No room for growth very hard to become full time Must make requests a month in advance even thought the schedule come out Thurs/fri for the following week, shifts can be unpredictable Coworkers with seniority have “better” shifts Scrubbing tanks may have you armpit deep They say everyone is equal and gets paid the same but not everyone put in the same effort, ex: some people don’t do pet care at all or never close or never work truck days
