Pros

New building, casual dress code and pets in the corporate office. Most people are friendly and want to be there, and will help where they can. The cafe is also pretty nice and a good selection of food each day. Depending on what team or department you are on, the schedule can be somewhat flexible. I was paid well above others on my team, so I can't complain about that... but while interviewing NEGOTIATE or else you are stuck with 1-4% raises year each.

Cons

Unlike a lot of companies I have worked for, Petco hires mostly local talent (they do not want to chip in for relocation if you are under a certain level). So, the talent might not be what it could be if the company looked outside of current San Diego residents. The yearly layoffs suck, but at least people are given severance (not sure if it's a good amount, though) and this yearly layoff practice is typical in retail. The expectations in this retail environment are not realistic unless tomorrow the internet shuts down for good and companies like Amazon or Chewy are no longer a concern. Budget for software and programs also seems to be a little stingy, saving money on tools only makes for frustrated employees and slow performance/errors.

Pros

friendly store managers usually good discounts nostalgic

Cons

Forced to stay short staffed. Couldn't take proper breaks most days as a closing lead unless it was during the first few hours of shift. At the time the regional manager seemed more worried about the aesthetics of the back animal rooms floor that only employees saw when we had ac issues, issues getting access to an exotic vet, and only had enough hours to have two employees working at a time most shift on most days. I only had a couple interactions but that was one of them. Could not call off sick without leaving the store scrambling to find someone to stay open. Also sold improper habitats.
